DOORS OPEN BRANT

Volunteer Orientation

Doors Open Brant volunteers greet visitors, hand out event materials, and count the number of visitors to each site

Application Form

Everyone who volunteers for Doors Open Brant must complete an Application Form.
If you haven’t already done so, please click on ‘Volunteers’ and follow the instructions.

Transportation/ Lunch

You are responsible for your own transportation to and from the event. Bring a lunch, bottled water and any snacks you might want during the day.

What to wear

Wear the ‘Doors Open Brant’ T-shirt provided. If the weather is cool, you’ll want to do some layering. (With that in mind we’ve included large and extra-large sizes in the box of supplies we sent to each site.) Remember that you’re representing our community at this event, so dress appropriately.

What to do when you get there

Arrive at your site at least 15 minutes before your shift begins. (The morning shift is from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.) (The afternoon shift is from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.) Introduce yourself to the person-in-charge. Get acquainted with the site; a quick tour would be helpful if that can be arranged. Find out where the washrooms are located. (Check our brochure to find out if they are available for public use. If they aren’t, find out where the closest public facilities are located.) Arrange rest and lunch breaks. (This becomes important if you’re by yourself at the front door.) Make sure that our event materials are displayed on a table at the front door.
Put on your ‘DOB’ T-shirt.

What to offer Visitors

- a DOB Brochure (one to each couple or family) - a background information sheet (yellow) that gives the history of your site - a Visitor Survey to be handed in at their last stop (The names of all those who complete a survey will be entered in a draw for a gift basket containing donations from the various sites.) Use the Doors Open Ontario guidebook to talk to visitors about other Doors Open events across the province. (There are a number of other Doors Open events scheduled for the last weekend in September and three in October.) Invite visitors to pick up a copy of the Doors Open Ontario guidebook at their local tourism centre or go to: www.doorsopenontario.on.ca . Remember to keep an accurate count of the number of visitors to your site on the tally sheet that’s provided.

Questions/Problems

If there are any questions or problems that you can’t deal with, ask the person-in-charge. If that’s not convenient, contact a member of the Doors Open Brant committee. (Find emergency numbers on the inside of our supply box lid.)

At the end of your last shift

Complete your ‘Volunteer Survey.’ (We’re always interested in what you have to say about the event.) Students should get their Community Hours form signed by the person-in-charge.

Any students who do not get their form signed should contact: volunteer@doorsopenbrant.ca .

If you have any questions or concerns contact: volunteer@doorsopenbrant.ca or call 519-756-9217 or 519-753-4214.

Cancellations

If for some reason you are unable to fulfill your volunteer commitment, please call 519-756-9217 immediately, so we can try to arrange an alternate. After 8:00 a.m. on each morning of the event, call 519-757-2368. We are confident that you will make every effort to fulfill your commitment.
